Yellow Himalayan Fritillary is a perennial herb with
pale yellow, nodding, bell-shaped flowers or narrowly so. Flower-stalks
are 2-3 cm. Tepals are pale yellow, speckled with blackish purple,
narrowly oblong to obovate, 2-3 x 0.6-1.3 cm; nectaries are not
prominent. Stamens are about 2/3 as long as tepals. Style is scarcely
3-lobed; lobes less than 1 mm. Flowers are borne mostly singly, with
bract 1, tip slightly curved. Stem is 15-50 cm. Leaves are 4-7, basal 2
usually opposite, others alternate or occasionally nearly opposite;
leaf blade linear to narrowly lanceshaped, 3-9 cm x 3-6 mm, tip
sometimes slightly curved. Capsule are narrowly winged; wings about 1
mm wide. Yellow Himalayan Fritillary is found in thickets, grasslands,
at altitudes of 2800-4400 m. It is believed to be native to
North-Central and South-Central China. We found it growing in Tawang
district. Flowering: June-July.
Medicinal uses: In China, the bulbs are widely
used medicinally.
